Set between Fowey in Cornwall and London during Margaret Thatcher’s term in office as Britain’s Prime Minister, the story hinges on a mystery set in motion by strange messages – all about chess moves, but not real chess moves – almost impossible to sort out.
Tom Bainbridge is on leave, and Jenny Woodrow is on holiday. Both are drawn into the story, but not by their own actions. They are drawn together then thrust apart by speculation and they must discover a way to find one another again. Tom has been drawn into an IRA plot, and has to find a way to stay alive while he searches for his one true love.
Jenny, mistrustful of all men, has to work through her past before she can find her way back to Tom, and her future.
